SMOOTH FILTER FOR motv FROM THE xawtv PACKAGE
=============================================

Purpose: Smooth the image to reduce snow at bad TV receiption

INSTALLATION

You can either build the shared object module from source or use
the precompiled module.
The module has been tested with xawtv-3.75, but it might also work
with some of the previous releases of xawtv.

COMPILING FROM SOURCE

1. Copy flt-smooth.c into xawtv-3.75/libng/plugins/
2. Add the module to TARGETS-plugins in xawtv-3.75/libng/plugins/Subdir.mk
3. From the top-level directory of xawtv, do "make install"

USING PRECOMPILED MODULE

The precompiled shared object module has been built for i386 under
SuSE Linux 8.0. It will not work for different architectures and
there might be problems with other distributions.
Just copy flt-smooth.so into the directory where motv expects it,
e.g. /X11R6/lib/xawtv/ or /local/lib/xawtv/

USAGE

To activate the plugin, set the capturing mode to "grabdisplay" and
choose "smooth" from the filter menu.

There are 2 options available that can be turned on and off separately.

Smooth over time: Calculate average of previous and current frame.
Longer filter lengths could improve static
images but would be unusable for movies and
require high CPU power. I found averaging of
2 frames the most useful filter.

Smooth horizontally: For every pixel, the average of the actual colour
and the colour of the pixel to the left is displayed.
